The Faculty of Natural Sciences is committed to restoring 10 ha of mangrove ecosystems in the district of Metuge in Cabo Delgado

Prontidão -“Preparation for climate change and equity in Cabo Delgado – Readiness” is planned to restore 10 ha of mangrove ecosystems in Metuge district and another 10 ha in Mecufi district. The initiative is a collaboration between FCN-Unilurio and Istituto Oikos of Mozambique, funded by the European Union for three years, to strengthen the capacity of government institutions and improve the involvement of young people in planning and implementing participatory strategies for adaptation to climate change, as a way to reduce the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters. In the initiative, UniLúrio, in addition to assisting in conducting baseline studies on the current state of mangrove ecosystems, is technically assisting in mangrove restoration and implementing alternative income-generating activities for communities that directly depend on the resources of these ecosystems in both districts.

Today, on February 22, the Faculty of Natural Sciences mobilized 20 members of the Bandar mangrove nursery association, and together they planted about 1700 Ceripos tagal seedlings (0.17ha) and 1020 Rhizophora mucronata seedlings (0.102 ha) in the Bandar community of the same district. A further 2,728 ha is planned to be planted in Bandar with about 300 people from the community, including members of the mangrove growers association, community fishing council, natural resource management committee, Islamic community, Christian community, and Bandar elementary school students.
