ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY

The Environmental Microbiology laboratory will have educational and research purposes serving local and regional interests in microbiological analysis of aquatic and terrestrial environments:

  1. the determination of aquatic toxicity through the use of indicator microorganisms (bacteria, microcrustaceans among others);
  2. Quantification of bacteria (heterotrophic; total coliforms, thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli) in water samples through the methods of Filter Membrane and Colilert;
  3. Survey of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spores in soil samples; Quantification of total bacteria and fungi in soil samples;
  4. Microbial biomass in soil.

The laboratory will also be dedicated to research and production of microorganisms used in bioremediation, advanced petroleum recovery and production of biofuels. The laboratory has been funded by the African Development Bank, and is expected to be operational by mid 2022.
