Terrestrial Ecology
The Terrestrial Ecology is one of three academic departments of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FCN). Its activities are based on the three fundamental pillars of the university Lúrio, namely: Teaching, Research and academic extension. Teaching is fundamentally dedicated to technical scientific training in the field of terrestrial ecology and socio-environmental relations of candidates for FCN biologists. In research, investigations are focused on inventories and study of distribution patterns of entomological, herpetological, ornithological, mastological fauna, socio-environmental interactions, as well as climate change in the context of ecological responses to climate change.
In the area of extension, is dedicated to providing technical support to institutions linked to the conservation of natural resources and management of terrestrial ecosystems, namely; reserves, national parks and other organizations with symmetrical purposes. In addition, the Bureau is technically connected to the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation (CICA), where it supports the provision of environmental consultancy services to various companies linked to the exploitation of natural resources in the north of the country.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
Community development program, under the ENI project
In this rubric, the objective is to create two artisanal associations composed of ladies from Vamizi Island, legalize them and train ladies in craft materials using coconut shells and customs in order to empower the local community. At this moment, associations called “Associação Nova Família de Vamizi” have been formed in the Lance neighborhood and “Associação Wanawaka Wa Vamizi” in the Aldeia neighborhood, the legalization procedures are already in process and negotiations with artisans have been carried out from the city of Pemba to train the ladies in Vamizi, that due to the situation of impassability to the northern part of the province it was not possible for the team to move to the island.
