OSOL community project: a toolkit for all
The toolkit is a tool that has been written by a range of researchers funded by the European Union, Darwin Initiative and the Fundation Ensemble in Partnership with local communities and various institutions such as the ZSL (Zoological Society of London), Association Environment (AMA), CORDIO, University Lúrio (Unilurium), University Aveiro (UA), new FCSH among other organisations to talk about the OSOl Project.
The project has been elaborated in phases, and therefore some of the OSOL elements are in pilot phase, the results achieved during the first phase of the project (2013-2018) are positive and demonstrate conditions for the replication of the approach in other communities in the province and, potentially, in the country.
Its contents range from the selection of areas, collection of socio-economic data, collection of basic ecological information, to the approach of establishing community structures for the management of marine and coastal resources, and alternative income activities to fishing, which include Horticulture, ACPES, Mangrove Nurseries and concomitant establishment of marine reserves and/or other forms of management.
The toolkit’s main objective is to serve as a resource for the expansion of the LMMAs network which are community managed marine conservation areas in Mozambique, using the approach developed by the OSOL project.
The toolkit’s mission is to provide guidance to organizations wishing to support local communities in Mozambique in managing the marine resources that are abundant in these ecosystems.
